Tabriz rugs - One of the most popular persian rugs

Tabriz rugs are some of the most popular persian rugs available. They are known worldwide for their exceptional quality. They have many unique designs, but the typical pattern is filled with dense floral motifs, large palmettes, vases, or vivid hunting scenes or pictorials in the field. These patterns can be with or without a medallion, and geometric designs are also seen. Tabriz rugs can be compared to Isfahans, Kashans, Kermans, Qums, and Nains.

The master-weavers of Tabriz often weave their signature into a part of the carpet's border. These signatures can, of course, be found on extremely fine rugs made in other cities, but a signature on the 'ceremonial' border of a Naqsheh is the ultimate in formality and sophistication, the true mark of a Tabriz.

The material used for the pile of are wool, silk, or a combination of the two. A beautiful blend of fine Kurk wool and silk is the most common in fine rugs, with wool only used in those of medium quality. In the very finest rugs, the foundation is pure silk instead of cotton, and some even have 18 or 24 karat gold threads woven into the foundation.

Tabriz rugs also have sub-styles:

1. Mahi - this rug has coordianted borders of soft colors. The colors available can be used to match any room and is commonly referred to as "The Decorator's Carpet".
2. Naqseh - this rug has an abundance of pinks on beige, or occasionally black. Generally considered to be the most spectacular type of Tabriz rug.
3. Tabatabaie - this rug is always made in touches of orange, lemon green and beige.

History of Tabriz rugs

Tabriz is the dominant city of Northwest Iran and is the second largest city in Iran. Tabriz has been a center of the Persian carpet trade for hundreds and perhaps thousands of years. Tabriz incorporated the ancient and lost techniques of the past and created a huge rug-exporting industry for Tabriz rugs.
